Abstract
Parents have a responsibility for children’s faith formation in the family.
Faith formation of the children can be done through praying and reading the Bible
together in the family. The Bible is the most valuable source of spiritual life. It is
because through the Bible the faithful can know about God and His will closely.
Parents have an obligation to invite and encourage their children to read, meditate,
and apply the content of the Bible. This can be very helpful for the children to
develop their faith and knowledge about God. Prayer is an intensive
communication between man and God. Through this communication, the faithful
can establish an intimate and personal relationship with God.
This research was conducted with the following objectives: 1) to identify the
understanding of the Catholic parents about the meaning and significance of the
Bible and pray, 2) to describe the habits of parents and children in reading the
Bible and praying together in the family, and 3) to analyze the extent to which
reading the Bible and praying together in the family have an effect on the
children’s faith development.
This research was conducted with qualitative methods. Research data
collection was carried out using interview techniques, and then research data
analysis used an inductive approach. The results of the research data analysis
indicated that respondents generally viewed that prayer is a means of
communication with God. The respondents viewed the Bible as a guidance for
everyday life. In general, the respondents admitted that they were used to praying
and reading the Bible together in the family. The family admitted that the habit of
praying and reading the Bible in the family greatly influences on the children’s
faith development.

Orangtua memiliki tanggungjawab atas pendidikan iman anak dalam
keluarga. Pendidikan iman anak dapat dilakukan melalui kebiasaan berdoa dan
membaca Kitab Suci secara bersama dalam keluarga. Kitab Suci merupakan
sumber kehidupan rohani yang paling berharga karena melalui Kitab Suci
manusia dapat mengenal Allah dan kehendak-Nya. Orangtua berkewajiban
mengajak dan mendorong anak-anak untuk membaca, merenungkan, dan
menghayati isi Kitab Suci. Hal ini dapat menumbuhkan iman dan pengetahuan
anak tentang Allah. Doa merupakan sebuah komunikasi antara manusia dengan
Allah. Melalui komunikasi ini manusia dapat menjalin relasi yang intim dan
personal dengan Allah.
Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan antara lain: 1) mengidentifikasi
pemahaman orangtua katolik tentang arti dan makna Kitab Suci dan berdoa, 2)
mendeskripsikan kebiasaan orangtua dan anak membaca Kitab Suci dan berdoa
secarabersama dalam keluarga, 3) menganalisis sejauh mana kebiasaan orangtua
dan anak membaca Kitab Suci dan berdoa bersama dalam keluarga berpengaruh
terhadap perkembangan iman anak.
Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode kualitatif. Pengumpulan data
penelitian dilakukan dengan teknik wawancara, dan analisa data penelitian
menggunakan pendekatan induktif. Hasil analisa data penelitian menunjukkan
para responden pada umumnya berpendapat bahwa doa merupakan sarana
komunikasi dengan Tuhan. Para responden juga memandang Kitab Suci sebagai
pedoman atau tuntunan hidup. Pada umumnya para responden mengakui sudah
terbiasa melakukan doa dan membaca Kitab Suci secara bersama dalam keluarga.
Keluarga mengakui bahwa kebiasaan berdoa dan membaca Kitab Suci bersama
dalam keluarga sangat berpengaruh terhadap perkembangan iman anak.
