Abstract
Orang Jawa memiliki tradisi selamatan untuk memperingati seluruh peristiwa penting yang terjadi dalam sepanjang siklus hidupnya. Dari berbagai macam selamatan, yang paling pokok dan paling banyak diadakan adalah selamatan untuk arwah, yang diselenggarakan pada hari-hari tertentu setelah seseorang meninggal dunia, dihitung menurut hitungan Jawa. Hampir semua orang Jawa melakukan tradisi ini, termasuk juga umat beragama Katolik. Apakah umat Katolik ini memahami makna selamatan arwah dan nilai-nilai yang dapat diambil? Bagaimana pandangan Gereja Katolik terhadap praktik mendoakan arwah? Apakah selamatan arwah menurut tradisi Jawa ini selaras dengan ajaran iman Katolik? Berdasarkan persoalan-persoalan tersebut, peneliti berupaya menganalisis bagaimana upacara selamatan arwah menurut tradisi Jawa dilihat dari perspektif iman Katolik.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Responden dalam penelitian ini adalah tujuh (7) orang asisten imam dan tokoh umat stasi Santo Antonius Widodaren paroki Santo Yosef Ngawi. Pemilihan responden dalam penelitian ini menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, yakni memilih sampel penelitian dengan mempertimbangkan maksud atau tujuan tertentu tanpa memberi kesempatan yang sama bagi seluruh anggota populasi untuk menjadi sampel.
Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa umat stasi santo Antonius Widodaren memahami apa itu selamatan arwah dan nilai-nilai yang terkandung di dalamnya. Diketahui pula bahwa umat stasi santo Antonius Widodaren cukup memahami bagaimana pandangan Gereja Katolik terhadap praktik mendoakan arwah. Gereja Katolik juga memiliki tradisi mendoakan arwah yang dinyatakan dalam Alkitab dan dokumen Gereja, serta mendukung praktik selamatan arwah menurut tradisi Jawa yang dilakukan oleh umat Katolik. Secara umum, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan selamatan arwah menurut tradisi Jawa dapat dikatakan selaras dengan iman Katolik, malah dapat membantu umat Katolik untuk lebih menghayati imannya.

Javanese people have a tradition called selamatan to commemorate all important events that occur troughout their life cycle. Of the many kinds of selamatan, the primary and most frequent is the selamatan for the soul, wich is held on certain days after one dies, according to the Javanese calculations. Almost all javanese people do this tradition, including Catholics. Do these Catholics understand the meaning of the selamatan and the immeasurable values? How does the Catholic Church view the practice of praying for the dead? Does the selamatan according to the tradition of Java harmonize with the Catholic faith? Based on these issues, researchers have been trying to analyze how the ceremony of selamatan according to the Javanese tradition from a Catholics perspective.
This study used qualitative research method. Respondents in this study were seven (7) priests assistant and community leaders at the St. Antonius Widodaren Curch, parish of St. Yosef Ngawi. The selection of respondents in this study used a purposive sampling technique, namely choosing a research sample by considering a specific purpose or objective without giving equal opportunity to all members of the population to become samples.
The results of this study indicate that people at St. Antonius Widodaren Catholic Community understand what a selamatan arwah is and the values contained there in. It is also known that they understand quite how the Catholic Church views the practice of praying for the dead. The Catholic Church also has a tradition of praying for the dead which is stated in the Bible and Church documents, and supports the practice of condolences according to the Javanese tradition carried out by Catholics. In general, the results of this study show that according to the Javanese tradition selamatan arwah can be said to be in line with the Catholic faith, in fact it can help Catholics to live their faith better.
